Truck Driver Gets Suspended Sentence And Loses License For Three Months Over Johanna Boni’s Death
A cement truck driver who fatally ran over motorcyclist Johanna Boni in a traffic accident at a Naxxar roundabout back in 2016 had been sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for a year, and has been banned from driving for three months.
Carmel Cauchi had previously been acquitted of causing the 25-year-old’s death, with magistrate Nadine Lia ruling that Boni had overtaken the truck, but the Attorney General appealed this decision.
The Courts of Appeal have now overturned the original judgement and concluded that Cauchi was driving recklessly and could have avoided running Boni over had he kept his eyes on the road.
Judge Edwina Grima sentenced him to six months in jail, suspended for a year, banned him from driving for three months, and ordered him to pay €2,117 in court costs.
