A 35-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman from Żurrieq have been arrested by officers of the Anti-Drug Squad in connection to the importation of a large number of drugs.

Following days of investigation and observation of the pair, Police were informed by the Customs Department that a suspicious package was intercepted coming from abroad. Said package was followed by the police to the pair’s residence in Żurrieq.

Police entered the house and arrested them both. They said they then discovered the package, which is believed to be a kilo of synthetic.

Synthetic is a substance that is often passed off as cannabis yet is very different and far more dangerous.

A further search of the property found more substances allegedly including cocaine and heroin.

This morning, the pair were brought to Court before Duty Magistrate Josette Demicoli and have pleaded not guilty – both were granted bail under a number of conditions.

These conditions include ordering the pair to sign the bail book daily at the police station, an imposed curfew between 11pm and 6am and treatment order.

The man was granted bail against a deposit of €6,500 and a personal guarantee of €15,000, while the woman was granted bail against a deposit of €5,000 and a guarantee of €10,000.

The prosecution was led by Inspectors Mark Mercieca and Alfredo Mangion. Lawyers Franco Debono, Marion Camilleri and Francesca Zarb were defence counsel.
