Two Maltese passengers, David Briffa and Eugene Camilleri, were involved in a serious traffic accident in Sofia in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Bulgarian media outlet Nova News reported that the Maltese men were passengers in a car that was being driven by a 19-year-old Bulgarian man.

Besides the Maltese men, the car was carrying three other passengers.

Briffa told TVM that the driver was driving excessively fast and the passengers had tried to make him slow down. However, the driver lost control of the vehicle, skidded and crashed into a pole.

The passengers have been hospitalised, although TVM reported that Briffa will be discharged tomorrow.

Nova News reported that the driver was arrested and tested positive for alcohol, amphetamines and cocaine.
