Two Syrians Charged With Assault Over Ħamrun Street Fight, 11 Charged With Breaching Public Peace
Two Syrian nationals will be charged with assault in connection with a major street fight that broke out in Ħamrun this week, while eleven others will be charged by citation with breaching the public peace and disobeying police orders.
In a statement, police said investigations concluded that a 30-year-old Syrian man who lives in Mosta used a wooden weapon to hit a 37-year-old Syrian in the head, while a 35-year-old Syrian who lives in Marsa used a sharp weapon to lightly injure a 23-year-old Syrian.
The 30-year-old will be charged under arrest this afternoon while the 35-year-old will face charges tomorrow.
Meanwhile, eleven other people – also believed to be Syrian nationals – who were involved in the fight will be charged by citation with breaching the public peace and disobeying police orders.
The major fight stunned Malta and prompted a debate about the livelihoods of certain foreign communities, with author Walid Nabhan warning that Syrian child marriages are occurring in Ħamrun.
Prime Minister Robert Abela described the fight as “unacceptable and disgusting” and PN MP Joe Giglio called for Identity Malta to improve its processes whereby foreign criminals get deported and urged the government to improve police conditions.
