Two-Thirds Of Malta Do Not Trust The Media With Government Recording 58% Confidence Rating
Two-thirds of Malta do not trust the media jumping up a massive eight percentage points for last year, with the country continuing to show confidence in the government despite a small drop.
According to the latest Eurobarometer survey, just 24% of the country trust the media while a massive 64% saying they do not, with 12% saying they do not know.
Meanwhile, the survey observed that 58% of Maltese people trust the government, a drop of 5% from November 2019. However, this is still a significant increase from when the figure hovered at around 50% in 2017 and March in 2018.
Noticeably, the government’s trust rating seems to have shot up after the conclusions of the Egrant inquiry were revealed.
As it stands, 26% do not trust the government, while 16% do not know. Parliament recorded similar figures with a 53% trusting the institution. The government’s trust rating does seem to run contrary to the 55% who do not trust Malta’s political parties
The government’s trust rating does look more impressive when compared to the EU average of 35%. However, Maltese people do seem to have a better opinion of all institutions, including the European Union than their counterparts, potentially attributable to a growing wave of discontent on the continent that is yet to reach the country.
When it comes the Malta’s justice system and police force, the country falls below the EU average, recording at 48% and 65% trust rating respectively.
