The University of Malta Academic Staff Association (UMASA) has released a statement expressing firm solidarity with academics in the United States facing growing challenges to academic freedom and university governance.

In its June 2025 press release, UMASA voiced concern over reported restrictions on the rights of international students and staff, the right to protest, and the undermining of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies at U.S. institutions.

“Critical thinking and research are infinitely enriched and stimulated by a diversity of viewpoints and cultural exchange,” the statement read, warning against the erosion of these fundamental values. UMASA applauded those institutions and individuals standing firm in the face of what it described as “policies and funding cuts that aim to suppress their mission, core values and functions.”

The association emphasised that inclusive education and open debate are essential to maintaining vibrant and effective academic environments, and reiterated its support for colleagues resisting efforts to limit them.
