‘Unacceptable’: Repubblika Calls For Attorney General’s Resignation After Court Clears Yorgen Fenech’s Lawyers
NGO Repubblika is calling for the resignation of Malta’s attorney general Victoria Buttigieg following the clearing of Yorgen Fenech’s lawyers.
“What happened today in court in the case of Yorgen Fenech’s lawyers is unacceptable in a democratic and civilised country,” Repubblika said in a press statement.
This comes after Malta’s court cleared the two Fenech lawyers, Gianluca Caruana Curran and Charles Mercieca, from bribery charges, currently representing Fenech in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
“The Court found that it was true that these two lawyers tried to bribe journalist Ivan Martin. But because of what the Attorney General did, the Court could not find them guilty,” Repubblika said.
“This is a very serious situation. Our country is in a situation where after a journalist did not agree to be bought and performed the duty of an honest citizen and after the police performed their duty and brought to court who tried to corrupt, the Attorney General then filed a ‘wrong’ charge, which led to the acquittal of the lawyers,” it said.
“For us, these are not mistakes. Today the Maltese state is telling those who are honest that they will not protect them,” it continued.
“It is unacceptable for a democratic government to remain silent in the face of such filth. The rule of law, where everyone is equal before the law and where the law is the same for everyone, means that you must take responsibility for such serious shortcomings,” it stressed.
Repubblika also reminded the public that Parliament has the tools to address these serious situations if the AG does not leave on its own initiative.
“Otherwise, Parliament would be confirming that the laws it makes are not the same for everyone: there are laws for gods and other laws for livestock.”
“We recall that recently, a decision of the same Attorney General, a person who shot at the Police while they were defending HSBC from being robbed, led to him saving years in prison and not even testifying,” it reminded.
“Our country cannot go on like this.”
