A man has been arrested after an undercover operation led to the discovery of around 1kg of weed.

Maltese police arrested 26-year-old Mladen Bjelica, from Serbia, residing in Mellieħa, after he signed for a delivered package containing two half-kilogram packets of cannabis.

The prosecution explained how an officer, posing as a postman, delivered the package to the accused at his residence. Bjelica signed for the package, whereupon he was apprehended.

Subsequently, a search at his home led to the discovery of 14 cannabis plants, along with fertiliser, masks, laptops, and other electronic devices.

Police detailed how suspicions were raised after other suspicious packages were flagged by customs officials back in November and December, 2023.

He pleaded not guilty to importing cannabis, being complicit in the trafficking of cannabis, illegal possession of cannabis not for personal use and illegal cultivation of the plant.

Bail was not given to the accused.
