A man working as bouncer without the required license has been denied bail after being charged with assaulting a man in Paceville.

Marko Jerotic-Mitrovic, a 27-year-old Serbian man, pleaded not guilty to causing 33-year-old Colombian photographer Sergio Ramirez Lesmes grievous injuries as he was celebrating Argentina’s win over France during the World Cup on 18th December, breaching the public peace and working as an unlicensed bouncer.

The incident happened in a club on St Rita’s Stairs.

In court, defence lawyers noted that Jerotic-Mitrovic had been living in Malta for a year and a half and lived in his girlfriend’s apartment, requesting bail for their client.

But prosecutors said that the man had no real prospects as an unlicensed bouncer, noting that his crimes were serious as instead of maintaining the peace, as a bouncer is meant to do, he broke the peace.

They noted that the accused gave himself in to police, but waited a week to do so.

Lovin Malta spoke to the injured and deflated Ramirez days after the incident as he was recovering in hospital.

Doctors said that Ramirez has been left with two facial fractures as well a compromised left eye following the attack.

Ramirez said he was watching the game at a nearby restaurant in Paceville with his girlfriend before going to Bar Native to meet some friends and have a couple of drinks.

Whilst his girlfriend and friends were able to enter the bar, Ramirez was asked to remove his cap by a bouncer. Ramirez complied, removed his cap, and was allowed to enter.

However, Ramirez said that “after about five seconds” he was pulled from the bar’s entrance, receiving no explanation from the bouncer.

Ramirez then decided to take a photo of the bouncer.

This led to him being struck down. At this point, he begins to get punched and kicked on the floor. He attempted to escape, however he was unable to get out.

Ramirez stated that he could not see who was attacking him, only mentioning that he could “hear my girlfriend screaming” as well as other people screaming in the vicinity after witnessing the assault.

After some time he managed to escape and go to hospital.
