An urgent European Parliament mission will be sent to Malta next week ahead of a debate on the current political crisis in December.

The request was backed by the Party of European Socialists, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s own political party on the European Stage.

“The Prime Minister’s position is no longer tenable. This is clear for all to see,” Nationalist MEP David Casa wrote when announcing the news.

“Big victory! The European Parliament follows my call and just decided to send an urgent mission to Malta possibly already next week. We want to ensure justice for Daphne Caruana Galizia and should support those fighting for the rule of law in Malta!” German MEP Sven Giegold said.

Malta is currently coming to grips with one of the most turbulent moments in the country’s history, with the Prime Minister’s former Chief of Staff Keith Schembri currently on police bail in connection with the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi has resigned and Economy Minister Chris Cardona has suspended himself. Both remain Labour Party MPs.

Over the last two days, protests have taken place, with thousands gathering in Valletta on Tuesday, and protestors turning to civil disobedience yesterday after police erected blockades outside of Parliament and Castille Square.
