Valletta FC has condemned as “appalling” and “disgusting” the remarks targeting its teenage Maltese player Keyon Ewurum’s skin colour following his first call-up to the Malta national team.

In a statement, Valletta celebrated the 18-year-old’s first call-up to the senior national team for the upcoming games against Lithuania and the Netherlands.

“This milestone is a reflection of his relentless hard work, talent, and character, as well as the club’s long-term investment in youth development,” they said.

However, the club called out comments targeting Ewurum because of his skin colour.

“We are appalled by the vile and racially charged comments made on public forums in response to this news,” they said.

“To see a young Maltese player mocked for the colour of his skin is disgusting, unacceptable, and a stain on our sporting community.”

“Let us be absolutely clear: Valletta FC stands firmly with Keyon. We are proud of the man and the player he is becoming.”

“He represents the values we believe in — courage, passion for the game and unity.”

“We will not allow our players – especially our youth – to be subjected to hate. They already carry the pressure of performing at elite level; they should not have to carry the burden of prejudice too.”

“To those who posted or enabled these comments: you do not represent the football community, nor the values of Maltese football. We call on MFA, the authorities and the relevant media platforms to take immediate action.”

Malta take on Lithuania at home tomorrow evening as part of their World Cup qualification campaign and will then travel to the Netherlands for a tough away fixture on Tuesday.
