The public ice rink in Valletta will not open later today after sudden technical difficulties arose today, a Malta Tourism Authority spokesperson has confirmed.
The 900m2 ice rink in Triton Square will “hopefully” open tomorrow or Wednesday as a maintenance team works to keep the ice frozen. The ice rink forms part of Fairyland, a Christmas market and attraction park set up in the entrance to Malta’s capital.
Photos of the ice rink taken this afternoon show that much of the rink’s ice has melted, forming a body of water where the ice skaters would have been.

Thousands of people visited Valletta last night to enjoy Fairyland and the many attractions on show; however, the ice rink was closed to the public.
Earlier today, an MTA spokesperson had said the ice rink was going to be up and running later this evening. However, he later clarified that an issue related to a power cut had led to a delay in the ice rink’s opening.
