Vandalism Days After Upgraded Public Toilets In Gżira Unveiled
The newly-upgraded public toilets in Gżira have been vandalised just days after they were opened.
In an image sent in by one contributor, the toilets – which began charging 50c to users to raise funds to ensure the maintenance and upkeep of the place – the toilet’s seat has been completely ripped off alongside the lid of the toilet paper dispenser.
Other pieces and bit of litter were thrown across the floor of the stall as well.
The new public toilets cost around €40,000 to build, with the money coming from the local council’s budget and regional funds.
Gżira mayor Conrad Borg Manche told Lovin Malta that the decision to charge people 50c ultimately stemmed from a desire to keep the toilet in a fit and proper state.
“We couldn’t afford to have it vandalised like the previous one was, so we need someone there all the time,” he said, noting it is common across Europe for people to pay to use public convenience.
