VAT inspections dropped 98% in May 2024, a month before the local council and European elections.
The average amount of VAT checks in 2024 amounted to 468 – in May, this number dropped to 13.
A total 5,625 VAT inspections were carried out last year with May registering just 2% of the total average.
The information was tabled in parliament by the Finance Ministry following a question submitted by shadow Finance Minister Jerome Caruana Cilia.

Last June, the electorate voted for its local councillors and representatives at the European Parliament. The Labour Party won the EP elections but the gap between the two parties narrowed significantly.
Similarly, the PL received 20,000 more first-count votes than the Opposition Party in the local council elections.
