Veteran DJ Warns Matt Blxck’s ‘Banana’ Eurovision Song ‘Not Art And Definitely Not Music’

One of Malta’s most experienced DJs has come out strongly against one of the favourite acts to represent the nation at next year’s Eurovision.

Joven Grech, aka Tenishia, warned that a victory for Matt Blxck’s ‘Banana’, a novelty act that sees Matt actually eat a banana on stage, would be a blow to “real talents”.

“Imagine for a second that after all the enchanting voices of Mary Spiteri, Ira Losco, Chiara [etc], a Tikki takki Banana eating song will win Malta the Eurovision,” Grech wrote.

“Would you be surprised? At the time being no! Does it fit the Eurovision? Yes!”

“This is what Eurovision is all about after all… everything but music.”

“This would really put all the real talents in the shade while encouraging people to do more stuff like this. Call it whatever you want but to me this is not art and definitely not music.”

With 20,000 YouTube views, Banana is by far the most watched video out of Malta’s Eurovision acts this year.

A number of people stood up for Matt Blxck and his eyebrow-raising song under Grech’s post, with radio host and influencer Valentina Rossi arguing that “you need to move with the times”.

“I’m not sure if you follow the Eurovision scene enough, but it’s what is trending,” she said.

“Saying it’s an insult to the industry is a big word especially when you see how music keeps changing every year. Not all artists have the same style and that is the beauty in creating.”

TV host and Kalkara mayor Wayne Aquilina concurred, reminding everyone how PSY’s Gangnam Style had gone extremely viral despite the amount of criticism it faced.

“Let the people speak, discuss, evaluate and criticise, it’s a sign that the song is eye-catching and an earworm,” he said.

“At least, someone in 2023/4 has come up with a style that is perfect for the Eurovision. If he wins, he won’t sing at a New Year’s Eve party in Vienna but at the Eurovision, which is all about fun and unity.”
