Voting Turnout For MEP Election At 72.6% – Down By 2% From 2014
The official final turnout for the European Parliament election is 72.6%, a 2% decrease from 2014.
This is the lowest turnout ever in an EP election in Malta, after voter turnout had also decreased by 4% from 2009 to 2014.
The turnout for those who voted yesterday was at 70.1%, however, the figure was updated to include early voters.
The 10th (Sliema, Gzira, St Julian’s) and 12th districts (includes Mellieha, Naxxar and St Paul’s Bay) recorded the lowest turnouts at 58.9% and 69.7% respectively.
The largest turnout was in the sixth, fifth, and seventh district who all stood at roughly 75.5%.
Experts are currently saying that the drop in turnout will most likely benefit Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and the Labour party
