It’s tragic news for anyone who loves Ta Qali’s Farmer’s Market or who’s gone vegetarian for Lent: an unbelievable 20% of vegetables tested in Malta have been found with illegal amounts of pesticide.

Pesticides can affect people’s health from headaches and nausea, to cancer and endocrine disruption, according to activists who campaign against their use.

According to a report by Times of Malta, tests were conducted on fruit and vegetables at the Pitkalija and the Ta’ Qali farmers’ market, finding that one in five items tested was not meant to be sold due to excessive use of chemicals.

The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority says all producers found to be over the limit were banned from the markets and court action has also been taken against them.

But if you’re the type not to wash your fruit and veg thoroughly before eating, now you know.
