Watch: Abela Mocks Grech For Wanting To Raise Politicians’ Salaries
Prime Minister Robert Abela mocked Opposition Leader Bernard Grech for proposing that politicians’ salaries increase across the board and suggested he was getting his priorities wrong.
Grech called for higher political salaries during an interview with Lovin Malta’s Tim Diacono earlier this month.
He questioned whether it is right for CEOs of private companies to earn more than double the €60,000 salary of the Prime Minister and for the salaries of backbenchers to effectively be topped up through appointments to government roles.
“Let’s stop taking ourselves for a ride, politicians deserve decent salaries,” Grech said.

He was asked the same question weeks later in an interview with Times of Malta’s Mark Laurence Zammit and reiterated his position.
Although Grech stressed that salaries should increase across the boar, Abela suggested he was acting out of pure self-interest.
“How ironic it is for an Opposition Leader, on the eve of the budget, to speak about how the nation should increase his own salary rather than discuss his vision for the country,” Abela told a political rally.
“It’s a few weeks before the budget and he’s talking about increasing his salary. These are the realities, my friends.”
