Watch: Abela Says Malta’s EU Membership ‘Has Barely Any Disadvantages’

Prime Minister Robert Abela praised Malta’s EU membership, declaring that it “has barely any disadvantages” and stating that he cannot imagine a scenario where the country would consider leaving it.

Abela was asked to comment on former PL MEP Cyrus Engerer’s recent proposal for Malta to enshrine EU membership into the Constitution to make it harder for the country to potentially leave the union in the future.

However, the Prime Minister said there was no need for this sort of debate as he cannot foresee a situation whereby Malta would ever consider leaving the EU.

“EU membership gives us so many advantages, and if you had to ask me for its disadvantages, I would say there are barely any,” he said.

“I cannot imagine a discussion arising about whether Malta should consider leaving the EU. I am so proud of being one of the 27 EU leaders with the privilege of taking collective decisions and I cannot imagine Malta ever moving towards that kind of discussion.”

Abela went a step further, and said discussions should focus on whether the EU should expand to 34 member states.

“Will anyone in their right mind consider leaving the EU? It would be crazy to start a debate on whether Malta should leave the single market; it is obvious to me.”
