Watch: Abela Slams EU Politicians For Using Israel-Palestine To Advance Their Careers

Prime Minister Robert Abela accused European Union leaders of leveraging their positions for personal gain amid the seemingly never-ending Israeli-Hamas conflict.

“There were those who, instead of utilising their authority and resources, which includes her position, to seek a resolution for peace and avert further loss of life, employed them as opportunities to advance in her career,” Abela said on Sunday morning during an address.

“She only perceived an opportunity for personal progress, how much more she will achieve, how much further she will advance. It’s a shame. This underscores the disparity in our political approaches,” Abela continued.

He criticised these leaders for not using their authority and resources to seek peace and prevent further loss of life.

Some EU leaders, like Roberta Metsola and Ursula von der Leyen, faced backlash both locally as well as across the bloc or their visit to Israel, where they donned bulletproof vests.

Critics saw this move as exceeding their authority, and doing little to advance peace talks in the region nor condemning Israel’s explosive and brutal response to Hamas terror attacks.

Abela continued to stress the importance of maintaining neutrality and promoting peace, citing Malta’s role in hosting Ukraine peace talks as an example of the benefits of such an approach.
