Watch: Abela Warns PN MPs Staged Walkout To Cover Up Massive Cracks

Prime Minister Robert Abela said the Opposition decided to walk out of Parliament today because massive cracks would have emerged had they remained for the vote.

While Opposition Leader Bernard Grech justified the PN’s decision to boycott the discussion on censuring MP Karol Aquilina – calling the motion “anti-democratic” – Prime Minister Robert Abela hinted that deeper issues were at play.

He specifically name-dropped PN MP Alex Borg, who told Lovin Malta that he had personally called up Speaker Anġlu Farrugia to express his solidarity with him.

“Alex Borg also told some people that he won’t accept this behaviour, and his exact words were that we aren’t living in Zimbabwe,” Abela said.

If he wants to say it’s not true, he can come here and deny it and I’ll summon witnesses.”

“However, when he had a unique opportunity to denounce his colleague’s attacks against the Speaker, he stood up and walked out of Parliament because he doesn’t want to harm his future ambitions.”

And Abela said that Borg wasn’t the only PN MP to express his disapproval of Aquilina’s actions behind closed doors.

“I know PN MPs by name who vociferously stated that they weren’t ready to vote for the PN’s position. And so the PN decided to walk out, because they knew that if it came to a vote, everyone would have their own beliefs and ambitions.”

He warned that the Opposition faces a leadership vacuum.

“There are aspiring leaders and de facto leaders, but where is their current leader to take a decision and tell his MPs to follow it? This is the biggest problem in the Opposition. It is a ship led by a group of captains or captain-hopefuls, which constantly changes direction, and the party doesn’t know what it stands for.”
