Watch: Adrian Delia Claims Malta’s Population Skyrocketed To 800,000 People

Adrian Delia claimed that Malta’s population has shot up to 800,000 people, despite official statistics placing it at just over 574,000.
The PN leadership contestant made this claim when interviewed by Andrew Azzopardi at a recent campaign rally.
“Can we agree that we have a population problem?” he questioned. “Some 800,000 people live in this small island, which makes Malta the most densely populated country in Europe.”
“Our infrastructure isn’t equipped for so many people. Our hospitals and clinics aren’t equipped for that number.”
Questioned about this figure, Delia said he was quoting a business’ study.
Similar claims were made by outgoing PN leader Bernard Grech last year, but the National Statistics Office insisted the numbers were inaccurate.
Delia stressed that a future PN government should prioritise tackling overpopulation problem and warned that many third-country nationals who move to Malta have no intention of integrating with the locals.
“They don’t come here because they like Malta or because they found better opportunities in more developed countries, like the Maltese people who migrated to the US, Canada and Australia the 1950s. They come here to work for 18 months, send all their earnings back home and then leave or move to another European country.”
