Watch: Adrian Delia Reads Out Five Damning Quotes From Court’s Hospital Judgement

Adrian Delia has read out five particularly powerful quotes from today’s court appeal judgement over the Vitals-Steward hospital deal to lay out exactly how shocking the ruling is.

“The government betrayed its own people,” Delia told a press conference before reading out the quotes on how high-ranking government members had colluded with the two hospital concessionaires to defraud the nation.

These are the quotes that Delia read out:

1. “In the belief of the court, the way the story developed doesn’t show deception from one side and genuineness from the other, as the first court believed. Rather it shows collusion between the company [Steward] and top government officials or its agencies, which led to the formulation of contracts whose goals weren’t to provide a quality medical service but to reach other aims.”

2. “After [Vitals and Steward] missed milestone after milestone, the reaction of people who had to safeguard the national interest wasn’t to seek contractual remedies but to keep giving them even more time, without them giving anything in return. Indeed, as the timeline clearly shows, the same company kept receiving millions of euro. Rather than exposing the fact that the project wasn’t feasible, they gave the impression that everything was still progressing forward.”

3. “It is true that the fraud is relevant to the goals of the case, but this wasn’t fraud in the sense of deceit by one of the parties [Steward] against the other [the government]. Rather, it took the form of collusion between the two parties.”

4. “We have seen that the granting to the concession was the result of collusion between parties that took place when the company were selected as the preferred bidder after receiving access to privileged information, and when those who were meant to safeguard the national interest kept giving them more time even when it became clear that the milestones were unfeasible.”

“They did so to ensure that the agreement, which was a facade rather than the real deal, doesn’t get exposed. It kept paying them millions of euro even though they weren’t fulfilling their obligations.”

5. “It would have been a good legal basis to validate the contract if what was said is true. However, we have seen that the thoughts behind the contract were the fruit of simulation and collusion.”

“For the first time, we have a declaration that the PL government betrayed the people of Malta and that it forced the people to keep paying millions of euro to conceal this robbery,” Delia said afterwards.

“Can you imagine this? The government’s role should be to safeguard the national interest, but from the very start of this deal, high-ranking officials planned, behind our backs, to rob the nation in the most abusive and illegal and immoral manner.”

“When they were caught, and Steward themselves said the deal was fraudulent, the government kept extending their concession and giving them even more hundreds of millions. These are criminal acts of the highest level.”

What action do you think should be taken in light of this court case?
