Opposition leader Adrian Delia has vowed to work even harder to attract people to the party in the wake of a resounding defeat at the European Parliament elections.

“Despite this loss, the PN remains Malta’s second largest party and we have an obligation to represent the people who support us in the best way possible,” he said. “We must also thank all those who didn’t vote for us and we must understand why we have not yet won their respect. We must also find out why thousands of people chose not to participate in this democratic process. We must understand their aspirations, their pains and everything we haven’t understood so far.”

Delia said that the PN is passing through its worst moment in history but appeared to absolve himself of the brunt of the blame, by noting that the party’s serious problems preceded his leadership.

“I didn’t become PN leader when everything was rosy, but rather at a period when we were suffering a deficit of finances and votes,” he said. “The vote deficit has now increased but we won’t lose heart. We will work with humility and tranquility to find out why we aren’t yet the people’s choice.”

“We won’t abandon the road we have taken in terms of meeting people. Indeed, we must meet with even more people and even more institutions. We must meet with every sector of society to understand their needs.”

“In its hardest moments, the PN has always managed to attract the best people. In these worst of times, we must find the best in ourselves. We must be better than ever before and invite new faces to join us.”

“The process has started and it will take longer than a few months. For the country’s sake, we cannot lose heart. The road is long but we must walk it together.”
