Watch: ‘Agħtu Kasna’ – PL Għaxaq Councillor Calls Out Lack Of Action Over Rubbish In Valley
Filming the state of a valley in his hometown, PL Għaxaq councillor Twanny Vella called out the authorities for failing to take the persistent rubbish problem seriously.
“Pay attention to us (agħtu kasna),” Vella urged the authorities as he showed people all the piles of trash, including a mattress and a makeshift oven, around the valley.
He said a team of volunteers had just filled two skips with rubbish, only for picnickers to leave more trash in the valley.
Vella said that, although the government is responsible for the valley’s upkeep, it is the local council that bears the brunt of residents’ complaints.
“It is discouraging to see the government neglect environmental protection by prioritising short-term gain over long-term sustainability,” he wrote. “It is equally worrying to see such a lack of public responsibility in maintaining a clean environment. These two attitudes combined endanger our health and the wellbeing of future generations.”
Vella said that while the Cleansing Department promised to install bins in the valley, they didn’t provide a waste collection service or adequately fund the local council to hire waste collectors.
Moreover, the bins they offered were plastic, even though Vella flagged a fire risk if someone discards a piece of burning coal from a barbecue.
