Watch: Alfred Grixti Reminisces On When Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici Informed Gaddafi Of Imminent US Attack
Social welfare head and longtime PL activist Alfred Grixti had words of praise for the late Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici over a particular foreign policy during his tenure as Prime Minister of Malta.
“Some newspapers are calling him controversial but he wasn’t that, he simply said things that the mainstream didn’t want to listen to,” Grixti said during a discussion on ONE TV about the former Prime Minister.
He recounted how Mifsud Bonnici had called up then Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 1986 to inform him that US warplanes were planning to fly through Malta’s airspace to Libya to take him out.
“Does that make him pro-Gaddafi? Its irrelevant; it can’t be that someone gives the impression that they’re always right and that if they can’t get what they want through legal means, then they will do so through force.”
“To quote former US vice-president Al Gore, Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici was an inconvenient truth. For him, what was black was black and what was white was white.”
He also praised the late Mifsud Bonnici for strongly advocating the rights of the people of Palestine to an independent case.
“We were openly in favour of the Palestinian cause and we need to be so again because just as the invasion of Ukraine is wrong, so is the occupation of half of Cyprus and the illegal occupation of Palestine.”
