Watch: ‘An Incredible Feeling’ – MP Alex Muscat Successfully Summits Mount Kilimanjaro In Aid Of Puttinu Cares
Mosta Labour MP Alex Muscat has successfully summitted Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in the African continent.
Muscat had previously expressed that he’s had his eyes on the summit for a while now – making it a personal challenge that he took on to raise funds for Puttinu Cares, a local cancer support group.
“It was really tough all the way, but we managed to summit. No day was easy, and nothing prepares you for the lack of oxygen. That is what makes it most difficult. You get headaches and feel dizzy most of the time,” Muscat told Lovin Malta.
“We started to summit at midnight. It was as cold as minus 15 degrees. We managed to summit at 7:15am,” he explained.
“Reaching the summit is an incredible feeling. Seeing the sunrise from the roof of Africa is something very difficult to explain.”
“At that point, you forget all the pain and cold and just feel overwhelmed with emotions. I feel very happy with the accomplishment, especially knowing that Puttinu will be benefiting from this,” he expressed.
“Over seven hours of continuous struggle against cold temperatures and tough terrain. I would like to thank those who sent messages of encouragement and those who sent their donations,” he said.
Muscat also expressed how he’s very proud of his success in reaching the summit of the highest mountain in Africa, a feat to which he committed himself months ago.
The mountain stands at 5,895 metres, and is the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world.
