Repubblika activist Robert Aquilina said he was given police protection after he received a clear threat in relation to his criticism of Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà for enjoying a “close relationship” with a major businessman.

“I can’t reveal more details in public, but the police has clear evidence that, as a result of my criticism of the relationship between Angelo Gafà and the businessman, I received a very clear and ugly threat,” Aquilina said on Karl Bonaci’s podcast.

“Should we be in this situation?”

In the interview, Aquilina opened up about how he regularly receives threats from complete strangers in his daily life and pinned the blame on the PL for campaigning against him.

“There are two types of threats – directs threats by very powerful people and more subtle threats, when a political party – in this case the PL – instigates its supporters to be violent,” he said.

Aquilina recounted how a person with a criminal history had followed him and his family to Sunday Mass, gathered intel about his family setup and used it to threaten him anonymously.

He was eventually sentenced to two years in prison.

“I heard the recordings of his police interrogation with my own ears. He confirmed to them that he had believed the PL’s lies about me and felt he needed to stop me.”

Aquilina also said he was recently threatened when he went shopping with his family.

“My wife and children were in a shop buying some presents and I was taking a phone call outside. This couple walked by, and the man insulted me, raised his fist at me and tried to approach me. I had never seen this man in my life but he had heard all the ugly things that were being said about me, and he tried to assault me.”

“Should we live in this situation, where those who expose wrongdoing are intimidated like this? Should I need police protection?”
