Archbishop Charles Scicluna displayed his sense of humour when discussing his infamous ‘Bovril’ nickname.

During an interview on the Church’s station RTK, Scicluna recounted how a group of youths had called him ‘Bovril’ to his face while on a flight from Rome to Malta.

“A couple from Sliema had approached me and said ‘Your Grace, what an honour, please pray for us’. Then three youths came up and said ‘Aw Bovril’.”

“I asked if they were alright, they said ‘alright, alright, but some people here are scared of flying, so please pray for them’.”

“I told them that a bit of Bovril would help.”

Scicluna’s comment was met with laughter from the audience, who appreciated his sense of humour at a comment intended to mock his physical appearance.

“You take it in your stride, but to me Bovril means an honest, integral and loyal shepherd,” the Archbishop said.
