Xuereb, released plans in 2019 for a single metro line with 20 stations, stretching from Mosta to Birżebbuġa via the airport, and then upwards along the east coast and straight to Gozo via a future tunnel.
Xuereb has estimated that it will take five years for all the necessary environmental, archaeological, financial and social studies to take place, and a further ten years for construction works to conclude.

The route of KonceptX's proposed Malta metro
In 2021, the government launched its own plans for a metro, drafted by engineering firm Arup, with three lines and 25 stations and with an estimated 15-20 year timeline.
However, the hype around the project has fizzled out significantly and the metro wasn’t mentioned at all in the 2023 Budget.
