The father of a Maltese youth who died in a construction accident spoke directly to Prime Minister Robert Abela and other ministers – moments after they voted against holding a public inquiry into the death of JeanPaul Sofia.

In heated scenes outside parliament, John Sofia, the father of JeanPaul Sofia, stood in front of ministers’ cars as protestors shouted “shame on you” and “mafia state” behind him.

“Are you going to run me over?” he asked the driver of one car that was fleeing the scene.

Eventually he stopped one minister’s car, with the driver winding down the window for the aggrieved father to speak directly to the minister.

“I haven’t slept in seven months,” he told him.

When a police officers moves in between them, he tells him: “he hit me with the car”.

John then turns back to the car: “are you going to sleep tonight? I haven’t slept in seven months!”

The government is currently facing widespread backlash following yesterday’s vote.

The final vote resulted in 32 in favour, 40 against, and zero abstentions. All members of the Labour Party voted against holding a public inquiry into the death.

Social media has erupted into endless backlash and reactions, with many Maltese citizens condemning the government’s stance, and accusing it of being complicit and seeking to hide the facts.
