Arrests have been made in connection to the 200-kilogram drug heist while under the watch of the Armed Forces of Malta, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said earlier today.

Camilleri did not specify the number of suspects apprehended but he added that some of the stolen cannabis resin was recovered after it was stolen from a container stored in an army facility at the Safi Barracks.

While being questioned by Times of Malta journalist Daniel Ellul, Camilleri said that while he is grateful for the Prime Minister’s and Cabinet’s reaction to him offering his resignation, he is still ready to resign.

He said he’s insisted multiple times Robert Abela to accept his resignation, however, he remains certain in his rejection and the Cabinet agrees.

The theft occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning when 200 kilograms of cannabis resin was stolen from the army facility. Camilleri promptly offered his resignation and suspended AFM commander Clinton O’Neill.

The Nationalist Party has requested an urgent debate in Parliament and have continued to insist on the removal of Camilleri from his post.

Lawyer and former PN MP Jason Azzopardi claimed that the individuals who transported the bags containing the drugs passed through an alley behind the barracks in Ħal Safi. There, they loaded them into a Skoda vehicle. He argued that there must have been a leak in the Court Services Agency which informed the criminals where the drugs were being stored.
