Watch: Bernard Grech Calls For Fresh Election In Ħal Għargħur

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech has called for a fresh election in Ħal Għargħur after the PL took control over the local council.

“Democracy means respecting people’s votes. If the government wants to respect democracy, it should therefore hold an election in Ħal Għargħur,” Grech said.

“The people will then decide whether to confirm the PN leadership or elect a PL leadership. However, Robert Abela is scared and he would rather steal the council than play according to democratic rules.”

Although the PN won around 62% of the Għargħur vote at last year’s election, it lost control of the council after independent councillor (formerly PN) Francesca Attard voted with the two PL councillors to remove Helen Gauci as mayor and appoint PL’s Mariah Meli in her stead.

The PN has called a political rally outside its Ħal Għargħur każin on Wednesday evening as a sign of solidarity with the ousted Gauci.
