Watch: Bernard Grech Hits Back After Being Told People Are Confused About What He Stands For

Two years since his election as PN leader, Bernard Grech has come out strong against criticism that many people are unsure about what he actually stands for.

During an interview with Lovin Malta, Grech was told that many people are genuinely confused about what he stands for, unlike other present and former PL and PN leaders.

“So in two years, you have yet to recognise what I’m doing, even though I accept every journalist’s invitation to explain things?” a clearly frustrated Grech retorted.

“I am trying to implement the politics of persuasion, respect and dialogue… we need to return to these basic principles that the country has lost.”

“The government doesn’t care about anyone and isn’t consulting with anyone and I’m not the one saying this… social partners recently wrote to the government to ask it to consult with them.”

“Power has really got to the government’s head and it feels untouchable; as a result, we’ve lost respect and the feeling of accountability towards the electorate.”

“I want to reintroduce that into politics. I want to reintroduce respect, accountability and proper behaviour into politics and if that isn’t obvious, even by the way I speak…”

Grech added he is intentionally moving away from politics based on personal attacks.

“Have you ever heard me try to destroy or hurt people on a personal level? I want to reintroduce the concept of respect, not only in politics but even in society.”

“I’m not saying that the people of Malta aren’t respectful but let’s be careful when writing messages on social media and let’s not immediately attack and try to destroy people as soon as they are accused of a crime.”

“We need to take a step back because everyone deserves dignity and we must work for a better quality of life.

“Quality of life involves health, which the government isn’t investing enough in but is instead wasting money on Steward as part of the Vitals deal.”

“It involves the environment… the government keeps telling us that it is pro-environment when the truth is that the situation has never been this bad. It also involves personal dignity, without the cost of living spiralling out of control. We need to work together to move in this direction.”
