Watch: Bernard Grech Mocks Andrea Prudente’s Surname And ‘Babymoon’ Holiday To Malta
Opposition Leader Bernard Grech lashed out at American tourist Andrea Prudente in Parliament last night, mocking her surname and casting doubt on her version of events.
“A strange fact occurred earlier this year,” Grech said during a debate on a proposed law that will allow doctors to terminate pregnancies when they believe the mother’s life or health is at risk.
“A pregnant American woman travelled over 20 hours by plane to visit Malta for a babymoon. I had never heard of a babymoon before, but you can see that even this American woman had referred to a baby.”
“She didn’t refer to a few cells, an embryo or a foetus, but a baby… a human!”
“After travelling over 20 hours, she came here and wanted an abortion. However, our doctors and nurses were prudent and did their utmost to take care of both her and her baby, so she opened a court case against us.”
“She still ended up getting an abortion because she travelled to Spain by air ambulance, and that’s where her babymoon ended.”
Later on in his speech, Grech took aim at Prudente for a second time.
“Her surname is Prudente, but as I already said, I think the doctors were more prudent than her.”
Prudente and her partner Jay Weeldreyer travelled to Malta last summer for a ‘babymoon’, a term for a couple’s celebratory holiday before the birth of a new baby.
She suffered a miscarriage when she was 16 weeks pregnant, rendering her pregnancy unviable, but was denied an abortion after doctors ascertained that her life wasn’t at immediate risk.
She ended up travelling to Spain by air ambulance to get an abortion and later filed a constitutional case against Malta, arguing that the country’s strict abortion laws breached her human rights.
Her situation attracted the attention of the global press, with Prudente speaking to several major outlets about her experience.
