Watch: Bernard Grech Proudly Insists PN Is ‘Only Pro-Life Political Force In Malta’
The Nationalist Party has formally announced it will oppose a bill that will allow doctors to terminate pregnancies when they believe the mother’s life or health is at risk.
“We consider this bill akin to the introduction of abortion and can never vote in favour of it,” PN leader Bernard Grech said in a recorded message.
“Abela is breaking the word he gave people in January 2020 when he pledged to fight those who intend to legalise abortion.”
Grech said the PN parliamentary group also discussed means to legally safeguard women, unborn babies and medical professionals in cases where “interventions are necessary to save women’s lives when they are in clear danger” but didn’t provide any details.
“The PN will remain the only pro-life political force in Malta,” he said.
In response, the Labour Party accused Grech of fear-mongering, misleading people and playing partisan politics.
“The law is intended to clarify the legal position of doctors and mothers in circumstances where pregnancies can cause complications that place the mother’s life at risk or her health in serious danger,” the PL said.
“The existing legal provisions on abortion within the Criminal Code will remain in place.”
“The PL believes there shouldn’t be any obstacles in necessary healthcare for mothers. This is a law that saves mothers’ lives. It is sad that Bernard Grech is choosing to avoid the facts when faced with a sensitive subject.”
