Watch: Bernard Grech Urges Civil Society To ‘Join Him’ In Jean Paul Sofia Campaign
An impassioned Bernard Grech has urged civil society to team up with the Nationalist Party’s campaign for heads to roll in the wake of the Jean Paul Sofia public inquiry.
“There is only one way forward,” the Opposition leader told a political rally today.
“We will keep on applying pressure and we invite civil society to join us. This isn’t an issue of who is right but of what is right.”
“We invite everyone who feels that we cannot keep going on like this to join us so that we can keep on applying pressure. We invite those who want our country to heal to unite with us so we ensure political responsibility is shouldered.”
The Nationalist Party has called for no fewer than four resignations in the wake of the Sofia inquiry – Prime Minister Robert Abela, Economy Minister Silvio Schembri, Environment and Energy Minister Miriam Dalli, and Lands Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzoparid.
Although Abela has pledged to reform the construction sector in line with the inquiry’s recommendations and to beef up enforcement, Grech warned that the government has no “political will” to change the status quo.
“After over 10 years in government, continuity triumphs come what may,” he said. “This means that we need a change and we must work for it together. The change you want to see is the change you must work for.”
Earlier this week, Lovin Malta asked Grech whether the PN will organise a protest if Abela, Dalli, Schembri, and Zrinzo Azzopardi don’t resign. The PN leader didn’t rule it out, stating that the party intends to keep pushing this issue.
