A powerful new documentary showing the real lives of two intersex South Africans and the challenges they face navigating binary sex and gender systems will be shown in Malta – and the protagonists themselves will be here as part of a discussion after the screening.

“Set in South Africa, the Romanian-produced ‘Who I Am Not’ documentary trails beauty queen Sharon-Rose Khumalo and intersex rights activist Dimakatso Sebidi.”

Vulnerability lies at the core of the narrative as Khumalo and Sebidi invite us into their most private spaces to witness the various medical, societal and personal challenges they face. Each scene raises questions about sex and gender identity, and who gets to define it.

The answers are surprising – even to the subjects themselves.

The award-winning feature will be having a Maltese Premiere on Thursday 14th September at the Embassy Cinema, Valletta, from 6pm to 9.30pm (including drinks reception and speeches).

Hosted by Think-Film Impact Production, the after-screening discussion will include the participation of European Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli and MEP Cyrus Engerer.

“Up to 2% of the world’s population are intersex, and yet it remains ‘the invisible I’. ‘Who I Am Not’ is powerfully countering this paradigm as the first-ever intersex documentary film telling stories of people of colour,” the team behind the film told Lovin Malta.

“Film protagonists Sharon-Rose and Dimakatso will be joining us in Malta and participating in an expert discussion after the film on advancing intersex equality and protecting the rights and freedoms of all in the LGBTIQ+ community.”

Spaces are limited – To express advance interest in attending please email [email protected].
