Anyone attempting to drive near the vicinities of Paceville Thursday evening found themselves in a gridlocked situation, with cars attempting to turn around in standstill traffic.

One man uploaded a rant from the entertainment town, showing a line of vehicles stuck bumper to bumper.

“My friends, this is the shithole of a country we live in. I’m dead-tired, and I can’t go home because they decided to close the roads in Paceville, and right now there’s chaos, everyone is bumper to bumper, swearing at the gods,” he said.

PN MP Albert Buttigieg took to social media to speak about the situation.

“Yesterday, it was impossible to go anywhere in Paceville and St Julian’s with your car. Everywhere was jammed, and not a warden or police officer to be seen!”

“But there wasn’t a march or anything,” he continued. “There was the contractor, Sur Bonavia, doing works for Joseph Portelli’s Mercury Towers. He decided to close the road to dig a trench! All without the required permission.”

“But Bonavia and Portelli do what they want… imagine if it was Mary trying to get a fridge up into her apartment, we’d create a whole scene and tell her to get not one warden, but two!”

Speaking to Lovin Malta, the company behind the works said all permits were in order.

“We would like to clarify that even though works were being carried out for Mercury towers, contractor Bonavia assumes full responsibility for execution of works. We can therefore confirm that that all works were carried out in accordance to stipulated regulations, and emphasise that necessary permits were issued by the respective authorities ahead of commencement of works, contrary to the statement made by Mr Buttigieg.”
