Watch: Cassola Calls For Shorter, 24/7 Bus Routes And Street Parking Fees

Momentum leader Arnold Cassola proposed a major revamp of Malta’s bus network, complete with more vehicles, shorter routes and a 24/7 service.

He said that once this is implemented, the nation should introduce a street parking fee system for everyone except residents of the particular town.

“It can’t be that a resident of Fgura or Żabbar has to wait for a bus to come from Marsaskala, and when it finally arrives it is full up,” Cassola told a recent conference organised by the Malta Institute of Management.

“The Sliema Ferries don’t even have a direct coastal bus route towards Msida, Pieta and Valletta. You have to wait for buses to arrive from Baħar iċ-Ċaghaq, St Julian’s, Pembroke and Swieqi.”

“Then the buses would be full up and you would have to spend another hour waiting on the bus stop like an idiot. And this is one of the most popular routes, which is full of tourists and language students.”

Cassola said that once an effective bus system is implemented, people should be made to pay for street parking in towns they don’t live in.

“If we have functional, 24/7 buses that arrive on time and ensure you can get to your destination on time, and it’s free, then I’m sorry but if you want to use your car to go to Valletta or Sliema, you should have to pay for parking.”
