Watch: Chris Fearne Carries Out Brief Experiment At Labour Conference To Prove ‘Irrelevance’ Of PN
“Let’s carry out a brief experiment,” deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne told PL delegates who attended the party’s general conference last night.
Fearne’s “experiment” turned out to be a simple question – whether anyone present in the room was able to think of a single positive proposal that PN leader Bernard Grech had come up with since the last election.
The hall turned silent as no one volunteered a response, and it wasn’t long before Fearne claimed that no one present could think of anything.
“It’s true that I only gave you a few seconds but I guarantee you that I could have given you minutes, hours, days and weeks and you still wouldn’t have been able to think of a single proposal,” he said.
Fearne said that this doesn’t mean Grech hasn’t come up with any good proposals, only that the PN leader’s words have fallen on deaf ears as barely anyone takes him seriously.
“Bernard Grech will probably come out and remind us what he said in June and September. However, the sad thing is that while it’s true he could have come up with positive proposals, it’s also true that we can’t remember a single positive thing he has said.”
“Nowadays no one cares about what Bernard Grech and the PN say because the PN has become irrelevant.”
“I don’t say this with a sense of arrogance or a lack of respect but with a sense of sadness. However, it’s the truth. Nowadays independent candidates and NGO which only represent themselves make a louder noise than the Nationalist Opposition.”
“The PN is no longer relevant and its statements don’t register with people.”
While Fearne’s comments may frustrate PN officials and supporters, post-election surveys have painted an extremely bleak picture for the Opposition.
In a recent opinion poll carried out by Misco for Lovin Malta, people were asked to rate the political leaders on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 the lowest rating and 10 the highest.
While both leaders failed to impress, Prime Minister Robert Abela’s average 5.1 score outpaced Grech’s score of 3.2.
Only 31% of people who voted PN at the 2022 election give Grech a ‘pass’ rating higher than 5, with only 15.3% giving him an 8, 9 or a 10.
Meanwhile, a recent MaltaToday survey found that only 7.3% of people aged between 16 and 35 intend to vote for the PN, making it less popular among youths than ADPD.
