Watch: ‘Christian Was Killed And Destroyed By Someone, Just As One Crushes A Daffodil’

Dun George Spiteri likened Christian Degabriele’s death to the crushing of a beautiful daffodil during the beloved soldier and father’s funeral homily.
“We brought Christian here today – like a beautiful daffodil that was crushed after someone killed it and destroyed it – and now the daffodil is no longer beautiful,” Dun Spiteri said during his homily.
“Today we bring forward this flower, in the temple of God, and present it to you, convinced that you will accept it,” he continued.
Amid the sorrow surrounding Degabriele’s death, speculation over what exactly happened that fateful day has been rife.
Sources intimate with the case informed Lovin Malta there is a high possibility that Degabriele died after being hit by a boat – with some even claiming that his diving suit was partly ripped when his body was retrieved.
Others are going so far as to speculate that Degabriele died after being hit by a speeding boat’s propeller.
And after yesterday’s funeral, TVM reported that ‘Christian’s life was destroyed by someone who killed him and kept going’.
All of this comes as no clear cause of death has been confirmed by authorities. Police confirmed with Lovin Malta that the magistrate’s inquiry into Degabriele’s death is still ongoing.
During the homily, Dun Spiteri also addressed the sadness, shock and confusion that mourners were feeling on the day of Degabriele’s funeral.
“During these difficult moments, filled with sadness and sorrow, especially for his wife, daughter, mother and father, and all of the people that knew him, we look towards God,” he said.
“For those that knew him, Christian was a determined, responsible man. He knew how to do everything, always with a smile, and see how to help others.”
On 11th August, around 5.30pm, police were called to the area between Buġibba and St Paul’s Islands.
Degabriele, a 35-year-old Għaxaq resident, was diving in the area but did not resurface.
The Armed Forces of Malta and the Civil Protection Department started an intensive search and rescue alongside a team of divers and a patrol boat and helicopter until his body was located.
