Watch: Citing New Gżira Lido, Minister Pledges Policy For Small Land Reclamation Projects
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Aaron Farrugia has pledged to publish a policy which will determine how businesses can reclaim small amounts of land from the sea.
Interviewed on Pjazza this evening, Farrugia cited the new AquaLuna lido in Gżira as an example of a successful land reclamation project.
“We’ve had land reclamation projects in the likes of Msida, Marsaskala and Birżebbuġa but it seems Malta stopped moving in this direction since the days of [former Prime Minister] Dom Mintoff,” he said. “
The thirst is there from the private sector and government.”
Besides small land reclamation projects of the Gżira lido ilk, Farrugia also pledged that Malta will play host to some “large” land reclamation projects within the next five years.
“We’re currently carrying out a study to build on what we have but Malta will see true land reclamation within the next five years.”
He didn’t provide any details on what kind of land reclamation projects he was envisaging.
It is worth noting that the AquaLuna lido had proven to be quite controversial as it was being built, with the now-defunct Partit Demokratiku denouncing it as a theft of public land for private interests.
Does Malta need more land reclamation projects?
