Watch: Daqshekk Prosit Ministru? Alex Agius Saliba Says Labour Must Be More Self-Critical
In his first speech as PL deputy leader, Alex Agius Saliba urged the party to stop acting as a government cheerleader and be more critical.
“If you see your son or daughter going out with torn or stained clothes, do you praise them or tell them to change their outfit?”
“This is what our role should be. Seeing as we love the party and want what’s best for it, the Prime Minister and the ministers, we must speak out and give them ideas and proposals. The best discussions, and new ideas and visions must be born here.”
“We must speak out and more and sideline the politics of ‘well done’, ‘thank you’ and ‘keep it up’. This isn’t the politics that will ultimately keep attracting people to us.”
Agius Saliba added that discussions on ONE TV must be more balanced and give space to people who don’t just praise the government if they are to reach a wider audience.
“The days of attracting the majority of people by simply publishing ministers’ statements are over. People want a mature discussion and, because we’re an open party, we should believe in discussion.”
