Watch: ‘Darna Hawn Issa,’ Maltese Couple Make Birkirkara Garden Their New Home As Rent Becomes ‘Unaffordable’
A Maltese man has taken to social media to show his new home – a public garden in Birkirkara – as rents become too unaffordable for many across the island.
“Hello – right now, our residential home is here,” Rayther Vella says standing near his wife, nodding his head towards the Stazzjon Garden in Birkirkara.
“Look at what we’ve fallen into. Can’t even find a place to rent, with sky-high rents wherever you look – plus, some landlords don’t even rent to Maltese people.”
“Shameful, and no one cares at all.”
Vella’s video, taken last night, shined a spotlight on the current renting crisis many working class individuals, couples and families face in Malta – and the topic is becoming more and more widespread, between homeless people allegedly being beaten up by local officers to Maltese students creating films focused on raising funds for the homeless abroad.
In his video, Vella then turns to his wife, who is similarly distraught to be sleeping on the streets.
“It’s truly shameful, it’s shameful what we’ve found here – sky-high rents, €1,200, and now we’ve ended up on the streets,” she said.
Vella turns the camera back to him, and ends with a message to the public.
“If there’s someone who wants to join us tonight, they can come and stay with us, and I’ll tell them thank you – because tonight, this is where we’ll be.”

Online, people had strong reactions to the video, with one person saying the couple should contact the YMCA, while others tagged Housing Minister Roderick Galdes.
“I know someone who ended up living in a caravan,” said one person.
“I’m so sorry for you guys, I pray that you find somewhere with a decent rent… too much is too much,” said another.
