Watch: Dashcam Footage Captures Shocking Moment A Rental Car Drove In The Wrong Lane

Dashcam footage captured the shocking moment a rental car was driving up the hill from Għajn Tuffieħa in the wrong lane.
The footage, which was sent to Lovin Malta by a local cab driver, shows the white rental car driving head-on towards the cab, with the cab driver acting swiftly and swerving into the middle of the road.
While the crisis was averted in this case, it would have been a different story if another car was occupying the other lane.
“Same as everyone I get frustrated having a rented car in my way, but I never lose my patience with them,” Jeremy Grixti told Lovin Malta.
“I see many locals lose their heads with tourists driving cars, sometimes even tailgating them viciously. This will bring more frustration and the consequences can also be fatal.”
“In the comments section of the post, some have also told their stories of collisions with rented cars. Apparently, someone had a collision with a French driver and he didn’t admit fault simply because in France they drive on the right-hand side,” he explained, referring to his post on Malta Road and Traffic Updates.
“I definitely don’t agree with people saying we should not rent cars to tourists but I think the authorities should consider printing out like a leaflet or something, explaining some basic tips about the Maltese Highway Code; such as driving on the left-hand side, whoever is going around a roundabout has the right of way and so on.”
“Some also suggested a four-hour to 12-hour course to whoever rents a car in Malta but I think it is not practical for those who will only spend a couple of days on the island. The leaflet can be distributed to the client when renting the car.”
“Someone also suggested putting up signs along the Maltese roads stating that we drive on the left. This is also a good idea,” he said.
“I spend 12 -15 hours a day on the roads and encounter many of these. I have even seen a car with foreign plates being driven on the opposite side of Mikiel Anton Vassalli Street, in St Julians but I lost that footage.”
