Opposition leader Bernard Grech has called for a public health emergency to be declared after Malta confirmed the largest single-day spike since the COVID-19 pandemic began a year ago.

“What is happening now is the direct responsibility of the Prime Minister and all those ministers who didn’t confront him,” Grech said in a press conference today.

“We’re now insisting that a public state of emergency is called. Health authorities need to take swift decisions without the need for political approval,” he said.

Malta confirmed 510 new COVID-19 cases today, the most cases ever recorded in a day on the island. The UK variant, which is highly contagious, is said to be a major cause of the spike.

The PN leader warned that health authorities must take over to prevent Malta’s hospitals from collapsing.

“Maltese families, businesses, teachers, parents and children are all paying the price for Abela’s failure to control the pandemic.”

Meanwhile, Civil Society Network called for a temporary lockdown and closure of the airport to curb COVID-19 transmissions.
