Watch: Devices Removed From Joseph Muscat’s Home After Security Services Leak, Jason Azzopardi Warns
Lawyer Jason Azzopardi has claimed that certain devices were removed from Joseph Muscat’s home after the former Prime Minister had been informed in advance of an impending police search by “people loyal to him” within the Malta Security Services.
“The leaks to Joseph Muscat came from the MSS, because a part of it is still very loyal to him,” Azzopardi said during a recent debate on NET TV’s Opinjoni.
“I had also known a few days earlier that the MSS had informed Joseph Muscat in advance, so much so that certain devices that should have been in his home were removed before the search.”
Azzopardi is the lawyer of NGO Repubblika, whose court application triggered a magisterial inquiry into the Vitals hospital deal. The inquiry’s legitimacy has been heavily criticised by both Muscat and Prime Minister Robert Abela, and Azzopardi has been accused of leaking confidential information from it.
However, Azzopardi denied leaking information and argued it is actually Muscat and Abela who have shown they were kept informed of certain developments within the inquiry.
He pointed out that Abela had abruptly cancelled a long-awaited trip to a major trade festival in Dubai on Wednesday, 19th January 2022, which was also the day the police search of Muscat’s home took place.
“On Monday, Abela was in Strasbourg to attend the European Parliament’s commemoration of the late Davide Sassoli and to meet with the newly-elected EP President Roberta Metsola. His original itinerary was to fly straight from Strasbourg to Dubai via private jet, but instead he cancelled his trip and returned to Malta on Tuesday evening.”
Azzopardi also zeroed in on Abela’s recent warning that the inquiry could be concluded before the MEP elections to deal maximum political damage to the Labour Party.
“The Prime Minister gave the impression that he knows what the inquiry will find. Maybe the inquiry won’t find anything or it will merely find administrative problems. How does the Prime Minister know? Using logic, you reach the conclusion that Robert Abela and Joseph Muscat are both informed, and we know they have potential informers.”
