Malta Public Transport has taken disciplinary action after a driver was filmed by a passenger scrolling on social media on his phone while driving.

Speaking to Lovin Malta, a MPT spokesperson said they had “identified the driver and disciplinary action is being taken immediately”.

“The company has a zero tolerance policy towards mobile use while driving. The health and safety of our employees and passengers is our top priority and such reports are always taken very seriously,” MPT continued.

The passenger who filmed the driver told Lovin Malta that he wanted to raise awareness over drivers using their mobile while on Maltese streets.

“They show zero responsibility for passengers life or whoever is commuting on the road,” he said, recounting an incident where a driver was too preoccupied with his phone to realise a passenger had rung the bell.

“My wife pressed the stop button and the driver didn’t stop because he was busy watching the screen, and she had to walk a kilometre back in such scorching summer heat,” he continued.
