Watch: Disjointed PN? MP Darren Carabott Says Politicians Simply Free To Express Their Opinions
Nationalist MP Darren Carabott delved into the perception that his party is disjointed by warning that Labour MPs sometimes repeat statements they clearly disagree with.
During a recent interview on Il-Podcast ta’ Jon, which is currently available to Patreon subscribers, Jon Mallia challenged Carabott over a point of criticism that is often aired at the PN – the lack of coherence over several policy issues.
Mallia brought up the PN’s constant U-turns and flip-flopping over the 2021 cannabis law, with party exponents espousing very polarising views.
“It made the PN seem incoherent and resulted in statements that lacked identity or the courage of conviction,” Mallia warned. “Ultimately this lack of character leads to a perception of disorganisation, which makes voters question why they should follow you.”
However, Carabott argued that he would rather militate in a party that allows its politicians to freely express their opinions than one in which they must toe the party line on every topic.
“This is what worries me most in this country,” he said. “Sometimes I go to Parliament, hear a PL MP spouting rubbish and see other PL MPs opposite me giving us gestures off camera which show that they clearly disagree with what their colleague is saying. However, when it’s their turn to speak, they say exactly the same thing.”
“Are we saying that the PL is organised because it has this type of attitude? Is this what you want in politics?”
